NE Architects는 2024년에 설립된, 서울 기반의 건축가 그룹이다.
NE는 ‘느헤미야(Nehemiah)’ 라는 이름에서 출발해,
도시와 공동체를 형성하는 과정 속에서 건축이 수행할 수 있는 역할에 주목한다.

우리는 건축을 단일한 오브제를 넘어,
데이터·사회·도시·공간이 유기적으로 관계 맺는 촉매로 바라본다.
건축 공간의 상품성과 예술성을 동시에 탐구하며,
근대적 건축 어휘로 조직된 공간의 현대적 활용 가능성을 지속적으로 고민한다.
또한 건축을 드로잉, 전시, 출판 등 다양한 매체로 확장하며 실천하고 있다.

Parking Tower in Sindang Station

The area around Sindang Station is a dense urban fabric where markets and small shops are tightly packed along narrow alleyways. Within this high concentration of small-scale elements, we felt it was important to introduce a small open space in between—creating a moment of pause where the city’s density can briefly breathe. By shaping void spaces within the urban field and composing layered green areas, we sought to soften the north–south level changes and provide an urban green refuge in the heart of the city.

신당역 일대는 좁은 골목을 따라 시장과 상가가 촘촘히 밀집한 지역이다. 작은 스케일의 요소들이 만들어내는 높은 밀도 속에, 우리는 그 사이에 작은 공터를 두어 높은 밀도가 잠시 숨을 고를 수 있는 여백을 마련하는 것도 좋을 것 같다는 생각이 들었다. 우리는 도시에 보이드 공간을 구성하면서 다양한 층위의 녹지 공간을 구성해 남북 방향의 단차를 완화하고, 도심 속 녹지 쉼터를 계획했다.

The exterior stair we designed functions as a vertical alley.
At the same level as the Sindang Station exit, we created a stepped open plaza, and extended the stairs leading into the building in the same material—allowing the building’s edge to blend naturally into the flow of the city.

우리가 구성한 외부로 노출된 계단은 수직적인 골목으로 작동한다. 신당역 출구와 같은 레벨에 계단형 공터를 구성하고, 건축물로 이어지는 계단은 동일한 재료로 연장해 건물의 가장자리가 도시의 흐름 자연스럽게 녹아 있다.

We explored the possibility that the way the city and architecture meet could operate by the same principles within the building as well. One key focus of this investigation was the relationship between the core and the space programs. By placing the core at the corner of the building, we improved accessibility from the city and organized the internal programs to directly interface with it. Areas that could not engage the core were instead planned as terrace decks, enhancing the usability of outdoor space. These exterior spaces, formed through this process, function as urban voids and were designed to blend naturally into the surrounding cityscape.

우리는 도시와 건축이 맞닿는 방식이 건축물 내부에서도 동일한 원리로 작동할 수 있는 가능성을 고민했다. 그 고민중에 하나가 코어와 내부 프로그램의 관계였다. 코어를 건물의 코너에 배치해 도시로부터의 접근성을 높이고, 내부 프로그램이 코어와 직접 맞닿도록 구성했다. 한편 코어와 접할 수 없는 영역은 테라스 데크로 계획해 외부 공간의 활용도를 강화했다. 이렇게 형성된 외부 공간은 도시의 보이드로 작동하며, 주변 경관과 자연스럽게 어우러지도록 했다.

We separated the mass from the community facility and the parking tower to secure a generous void space between the two buildings on the site. The curved, compressed volume engages with the scale of the surrounding buildings and helps clarify the flow of the street. Above the pilotis, the tall open space reveals a broad plane of color on the ceiling, creating a new “colored sky” within the city and offering a more relaxed experience.

우리는 주민시설과 주차타워와 매스를 분리해 계획함으로써, 대상지 내 두 건물 사이에 여유로운 보이드 공간을 확보했다. 곡선으로 압축된 매스는 주변 건물의 스케일과 조화롭게 맞물리며 거리의 흐름을 정돈한다. 또한 필로티 위로 확보된 높은 공간은 천장의 색면을 넓게 드러내 도시에 새로운 ‘색의 하늘’을 연출하고, 보다 여유로운 공간 경험을 만든다.

In this project, our primary concern was our attitude toward the boundary between the city and architecture. We questioned how a single piece of architecture should operate as one among countless structures along the street—whether it should ride the city’s existing flow or introduce a different rhythm, and whether its presence should dissolve into the urban fabric or stand out against it. We also explored the possibility that the spatial sensation of a horizontally unfolding alley could be extended vertically.
While we cannot make a definitive declaration, our experiment—shaped by the scenarios and experiences we encountered while walking through the alleyways—will continue as an ongoing approach to engaging architecture with the city.

이번 프로젝트에서 우리가 가장 고민했던 지점은 도시와 건축물 사이의 경계에 대한 태도였다. 하나의 건축이 거리 위 수많은 건축물 중 하나로서 어떻게 작동해야 하는지, 도시의 흐름에 편승할 것인지 혹은 다른 리듬을 부여할 것인지, 존재가 도시에 녹아들어야 하는지 혹은 드러나야 하는지에 대해 질문을 던졌다. 또한 수평으로 이어지는 골목의 감각이 수직으로 확장될 수 있는 가능성도 함께 탐색했다.
명확한 선언을 내릴 수는 없지만, 우리가 골목을 거닐며 체감한 도시의 시나리오와 경험 속에서 건축을 다루려는 실험은 앞으로도 계속될 것이다.
